Dental Braces

To achieve bright and straight teeth, most people in Sydney will rely on braces. While crooked teeth or misaligned bites can happen due to genetics, the only way to correct your smile is with orthodontic treatment provided by a dentist. And one of the most common treatments is traditional dental braces. But how exactly do braces work?

Braces consist of using brackets (metal or ceramic), wires, and rubber bands to help position and re-align your teeth to the desired position. Other than the common procedures like traditional or conventional braces, nowadays, there are other kinds of braces, such as Invisalign (invisible braces aligners) or lingual. All of which vary depending on each individual’s requirement and budget.

Here, you’ll learn everything you need to know about braces and its variations. But before we proceed to that, here are some benefits of braces to get you started:

  • Aligns the teeth
  • Grinding and chipping of
  • teeth is reduced
  • Reduces cavities
  • Easier to brush

What's the cost of braces?

The cost of braces is anywhere between $6,000 to $15,000 in Australia. The braces cost may vary depending on the patient’s age, type of braces, and severity of the dental issue.

Average cost of braces in Sydney

Because every patient is different, certain kinds of braces may or may not work for them. For instance, the cost of Invisalign braces starts from $4,500 for minor treatment, and between $6,000 to $9,000 for a full treatment. While lingual braces cost between $7,500 to $12,500, and can treat severe cases. As for ceramic braces, the cost can range from $6,000 to $8,500 for standard orthodontic treatment. While we realise this is not cheap, your dream smile is an investment that will last a lifetime. We can help make your choice affordable for you – let’s discuss your options during a consultation in one of our Sydney clinics.

When can kids get braces?

The right time to get braces can be very dependent on the child. Due to the structure and growth stages of your children’s head and mouth, it generally is advised to get braces between the ages of 10 and 14. While they are still growing, their teeth are more adaptive to change which will ultimately make the process quicker and less uncomfortable.

Do braces hurt?

Getting braces put on your teeth doesn’t hurt. It takes between one to two hours to have braces put on your teeth. However, it may take some time before you’re used to your new braces. During the first few weeks you may experience pressure and soreness of your teeth and gums, especially when chewing sores or pain on the insides of your cheeks, discomfort or minor cuts on your tongue when you subconsciously play with your braces.

As we’ve previously explained, braces work by continuously putting pressure on your teeth. So when you come in for an appointment and your braces get tightened, you may experience some further discomfort. However, this won’t be as bad as when you first got your braces and in both cases this pain can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

If you are sensitive to pain and need help to soothe the pain from braces, here are some tips to help:

  • Drinking cold water
  • Consume only soft foods
  • Take pain relief medication
  • Put an icepack on your cheek where the pain is
  • Use oral anesthetics

Is it hard to eat with braces?

Once you are fitted with braces, you may have to make some adjustments with the food you eat. You’ll have to refrain from eating hard to chew foods like candies, steak, chips, and the like. For the meantime, switch to eating soft foods such as noodles, steamed veggies, soft seafood, yogurt, soup, egg, and tofu. You can still eat your favourite foods, but make sure you’re not using your front teeth to bite mostly during the first weeks/months of your braces.

What are the different types of braces available?

Unlike years ago, when the only option for braces is metal braces, now there are other kinds of braces options in Sydney. Read below to learn more about which type of treatment is best suited for you.

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional braces are the metal braces you would think of when someone mentions conventional braces. However, they have changed a lot since they’ve first been implemented: making them lighter, more discreet and far more comfortable. They are now made of high-grade stainless steel, and lightweight metal brackets that are comfortably fixed to your teeth. The brackets are linked to each other with a thin archwire, which puts pressure on the teeth to slowly move them into the right position.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces work the same way to the previously described conventional braces with one major difference: they are less noticeable. Instead of metal, the brackets are made of tooth coloured ceramics. However, cleaning them thoroughly and repeatedly is key to make sure they don’t discolour. These braces are far less visible, while being equally effective. This makes them a popular choice with older patients, as they are more discreet and make orthodontic treatment far more subtle.

Lingual

Another discreet kind of braces treatment as the metal wires and brackets are located on the inner side of the teeth. Lingual braces are as effective as metal braces, but it can be difficult to clean.

Clear Braces (Invisalign)

Invisalign or also known as clear braces treatment are customised, plastic aligners that are suitable for patients who only have minimal cases. The good thing about Invisalign treatment is that you can eat whatever you want and it’s easier to clean your teeth and the plastic aligners as well because of its removable feature. Invisalign treatment can be quite expensive, but it works well for patients of all ages.
