Crowns & Bridges

Correct your smile with a crown or bridge

Crowns and bridges can enhance your smile by permanently fixing missing or damaged teeth. This restorative procedure uses prosthetic devices to return your smile to its natural appearance. A crown is used when a single tooth structure is damaged or fractured. A bridge is used when one or more consecutive teeth are missing.

When you might need a crown

If you have a worn down, broken or weak tooth – often towards the back of your mouth – a crown might be a great solution for you. This also counts for a tooth or teeth that have a crack or a significantly large cavity which can’t be filled. Especially when your dentist has already tried to treat the tooth with other treatments, like filling it or a root canal. It can also be used as a more cosmetic-like treatment when your tooth is misshapen or badly discoloured – similar to how veneers can be used. They can also be placed on teeth that are the anchor teeth of a bridge.

When you might need a bridge

In case you are missing a tooth, a dental bridge can be a good solution for you. It is a ceramic structure that spans the gap left by a missing or extracted tooth. A prosthetic tooth is fused between two or more crowns on either side of the missing tooth that serve as anchors. The anchor teeth are shaped to accommodate the crowns, and then a bridge is bonded securely over these teeth.

Looking after your crown and/or bridge

Some people have the misconception that a crowned tooth no longer needs to be maintained. However, crowns and bridges are still susceptible to decay near the gum-line the same as a natural tooth, so it is extremely important to maintain excellent oral hygiene with your new crown or bridge. We would advise a toothpaste with a high fluoride content, and make sure to make flossing part of your routine if you haven’t already.

How much does a crown or bridge cost?

Keep in mind this type of treatment is a long-lasting solution to optimise your smile. You can expect your crown or bridge to last between 7 to 15 years, while excellent oral hygiene can further extend the life of your crown or bridge.

You can expect a crown to cost between $1,600 and $2,300 in Sydney and surrounding areas, depending on the aim and complexity of your treatment. Considering a bridge needs at least two crowns and a prosthetic tooth you can expect to pay up to $5,000.
