Dental Implants

If you’re missing teeth or even just a single tooth, dental implants are a common tooth replacement to help restore your smile. You may have missing teeth as a result of disease, decay or even trauma. Dental implants, also referred to as permanent, partial dentures, are the most natural looking solution. If you are looking for an experienced dental practice for dental implants, your local dentist, White Dental Clinic are proud to offer you high quality treatments and some of the best dental implants Sydney has to offer.

Not having all of your teeth can not only affect your smile and overall the appearance. Other issues that can be brought on by missing teeth are speech problems and your ability to eat. A missing tooth can also cause your other remaining teeth to shift to fill in the space, which can then create numerous cosmetic and hygienic dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. This means dental implants are both a functional and cosmetic solution when missing teeth, making them the most common treatment in suited situations.

So what is a dental implant?
Teeth implants are a titanium root that a dentist implants into your jawbone, beneath your gums. Once your dental implants are in place, they will provide a solid foundation to have an artificial tooth (a crown) placed on the dental implant. From there, dental implants will act just like your natural teeth.

Dental Implants are ideal for any age group. Young adults can keep their appearance youthful while enjoying their dental implants for a long period of time. For older patients there are still numerous benefits to getting dental implants, by enjoying your life with a natural smile that will help prevent infection and other dental health issues. As a rule of thumb, the youngest you can be to get a dental implant is about 17 years old. Your jaw needs to be completely grown and ready for the dental implants to avoid interfering with normal bone development. On the other hand, there’s no real maximum age limit for how old you can be for a dental implant. As long as you have fully grown teeth, a healthy jawbone and no condition or gum disease, then you’re in good condition to get dental implants!

While dental implants are the most popular option for missing teeth, other treatment options available are dentures, and a fixed or composite bridge. In some cases a dental implant will not be a viable option, eliminating the choice of opting for dental implants. To be suitable, you do need a healthy gum and jawbone and be free of infection, considering those factors can affect the bone healing. We want to make sure your treatment won’t cause any further damage and is as pain-free as possible.

As mentioned before, tooth decay is one of the most common causes of a missing tooth which then could lead to dental implants. There are symptoms to look out for, as well as ways to prevent it. If you’re experiencing tooth aches or sensitivity, spots or holes appearing on your teeth, bad breath or pain, you may have tooth decay. Wondering how can you prevent this from happening so you won’t need dental implants? By visiting your dentist regularly, cutting down on sugary drinks and food, brushing your teeth properly, avoiding over-consumption of alcohol or smoking and drinking plenty of water you can make a massive difference in your dental health. If you have concerns on any of the above, book an appointment with one of our friendly dentists for a check-up, and they can see if implants are a solution that suits you.

The benefits of dental implants are endless. They can provide improved appearances, speech and comfort as well as durability, convenience and making it easier to eat. But like any implant dental procedure, there are risks of possible infection, damage to surrounding structures or dental implant failure or breakage. It’s important to know these and your trusted dentist will walk you through all aspects of the procedure for implants before deciding on the procedure.

You can undergo your dental implant procedure at your trusted dental clinic in Sydney, either at our Gordon or Chatswood practice. Our dentists are well-experienced with dental implant treatment and have state of the art technologies behind them for the treatment to run as smoothly as possible.

Dental Implant Costs

The cost of dental implants start at $3,500, including implant surgery and crown. Dental implant cost will range higher depending on numerous factors. The number of teeth you need replacing and the materials used can affect the price, as well as the complexity of the treatment. Dental implants are long term and can last a lifetime, so the dental implants cost is worthwhile in the long run. While we understand dental implant costs aren’t considered cheap, we can offer affordable and viable prices to suit your budget. At White Dental Clinic, we can also help look at finance options that can make the treatment more affordable for you.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are built to last. With proper dental care and hygiene, teeth implants last for up to 25+ years or even last a lifetime in some cases. Dental implants last for as long as you take good care of them, and this can be long term.

Aftercare instructions for immediate care after receiving your implants would be provided by your dentist depending on your individual case. But, this often consists of: not driving home yourself after surgery, avoiding hot food and drinks that same day and placing an ice pack on the treatment area of the face where your implants are, to prevent swelling.

What are the risks involved?

Although a tooth implant is one of the most common, safe and predictable dental procedures, dental implants also come with their own risks.

Infection. Infection is a considerable complication which can occur in the implementation area of the dental implant.

Damage to surrounding structures. During the procedure of placing the implant in the jaw, there may be damage to the surrounding structures which can sometimes lead to sinus problems.

Implant failure. Within the first few weeks after receiving dental implants, the bone around it begins to grow and combine with the implant. However, if the implant is not in the jawbone correctly, it will not be stable enough and the tooth replacement may fail.

Implant breakage. The most risky complication that may occur with dental implants, is that the implant could break. In this case the dental implant would need to be replaced entirely, which unfortunately isn’t a quick fix. This can arise if the bone is too weak and it can no longer support the implant.

With all of these risks comes good dentists. Our team at White Dental Clinic are experts, and we often carry out the implant procedure in our Sydney clinics, so you can rest assured you’re in safe hands.

What's the dental implants procedure like?

The dental implant procedure usually takes a few months to complete from start to finish.

  1. The first step for your dental implants is your consultation where we will take scans and X-rays of your teeth so that our dentists can get a clear view of your dental structure and can start to plan the implant placement.
  2. Next, you would undergo a minor surgery to implant the titanium root into your jawbone. For a lot of people, this may cause discomfort or fear, but our dentists can administer anaesthetic to minimise discomfort and put you at ease to receive the implants.
  3. After the dental implant is secure in the jawbone, we have to wait a couple of months so the implant can settle as your jawbone starts to adjust and grow around it. Then, we would make the new foundation for your tooth.
  4. To complete the procedure we would then make a mould of your mouth so we can tailor the crown to be as close to your natural teeth as possible. Finally, the dental implant or multiple dental implants, are placed into the foundation via a dentist implant.

Everyone has different thresholds for pain and so the same applies for a dental implant procedure. Some may feel nothing while others experience some discomfort. As for after the surgery, recovery time tends to be quite quick. Some initial discomfort in your jaw may be experienced after receiving dental implants, as you would have had your mouth open for a long period of time. After, there may be some tenderness or pain in your teeth, but this does tend to go away over a few days and some numbness or bleeding. Mainly, you shouldn’t put off or be scared of a dental implant procedure, there’s nothing to worry about!
